"We are very happy with and are proud of the award," PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara President Director Martiono Hadianto said in a press statement on Sunday.
The award proved that Newmont was committed to always operating mining area according to corporate values, to be at the forefront of campaigns for occupational safety, environmental protection and social responsibility, he said.
Newmont was declared one of the award recipients when Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Darwin Zahedy Saleh opened a function marking the 66th anniversary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry on Sept 28.
Director General of Mineral and Coal at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Thamrin Sihite handed the award to Newmont on Friday night.
Newmont was one of the two mining companies winning the awards. The two companies bested around 60 mining companies.
Aditama award is the highest award from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry for the category of environment management.
Newmont has been operating gold and copper mines at Batu Hijau area in West Sumbawa since 2000. It is now employing around 7,000 workers, most of them locals. (*)
