Bandung, West Java (ANTARA News) - A total of six volcanoes in Indonesia are on alert status and being closely watched by the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG), an official said.

"Yes there are six volcanoes on alert status at the moment. They are the Lokon and Karangetang (North Sulawesi province), Papandayan (West Java), Anak Ranakan (East Nusatenggara), Tambora (West Nusatenggara) and Anak Krakatau (Banten)," PVMBG Chief Surono said here on Tuesday.

He said the PVMBG had raised Anak Krakatu`s status from watchful to alert last Sept 30 due to its increasing activity which recently included emission of volcanic materials.

Mt Anak Krakatau is located in the Sunda strait which separates Java from Sumatra islands.
