Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Agung Laksono has reiterated the government`s commitment to tackling the impacts of climate change.

"The government is already making efforts to anticipate the impacts of climate change. One of these efforts has been the establishment of a National Council on Climate Change (DNPI)," Laksono said here on Thursday.

The DNPI is directly led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, while Laksono as coordinating minister for people`s welfare is its vice chairman. The Council`s members are officials of several ministries and institutions.

President Yudhoyono had some time ago pledged to cut the greenhouse gas emission level by 26 percent from business as usual levels by 2020, and by 41 percent with international assistance.

"With international aid, we could cut much more," he said.

For the purpose, the head of state had ordered the drafting of a time frame for the achievement of the actual target up to 2020.

"Besides, the head of state has also asked for an annual time frame to make the emission reduction measureable and the annual target achievement must be announced by mid-December," Laksono said.

The president had also issued instructions to launch various supporting programs such as the one-billion-tree-planting campaign , forest fire handling, and a national cleanliness movement.

"By carrying out these programs, hopefully the government`s commitment to addressing the climate change problem can be fulfilled," the minister said.(*)
