Dipo said here on Monday the presidential regulation which was signed on October 5, 2011, was issued in response to the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that had caused global warming and climate change.
He said global warming and climate change were reducing the quality of the environment.
Article 63, clauses 1,2 and 3 of Law No. 32 / 2009 on Protection and Management of the Environment authorized the central and regional governments to organize an inventory on greenhouse gases.
"To that end , a presidential regulation on a national inventory of green house gases needs to be issued." Dipo said.
According to Dipo, Indonesia had been active in efforts to prevent the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Indonesia was making the efforts jointly with other countries and international organizations.
The government earlier this month renewed its commitment to achieve a 26-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
"Although no developing country, including Indonesia, is obliged to cut gas emissions by 26 percent, Indonesia will do it," Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said at the conclusion of an international conference of Tunza environment at the Merdeka Building in Bandung, West Java.
Gusti noted that three essential steps could be taken to reduce gas emissions in Indonesia, including preventing deforestation, planting more trees, processing wastes properly and using energy as efficiently as possible.
One of the steps was taken by adopting a program called "Moving toward Green Indonesia" which served as a tool to develop and control conservation programs and deal with environmental destruction and climate change, he said.(*)
