"We will pay a visit to Myanmar by the end of this month based on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s instruction to observe the latest developments in that country," Marty said at a joint press conference with his visiting Japanese counterpart, Koichiro Gemba, here Friday.
He said he would visit Myanmar is to observe the latest developments in the country without any intention to influence the political processes there.
"We are glad that Myanmar has achieved a democratic momentum and we should maintain that momentum so that their commitment (to democracy) can be fulfilled," Marty said.
Marty said developments in Myanmar were also discussed with his counterpart, Koichiro Gambe, at their meeting earlier on Friday morning.
Earlier, Indonesia had welcomed the Myanmar government`s decision to release thousands of prisoners in the country.
"This is significant progress and in line with Indonesia`s hope to see the principles of democracy implemented more consistently in Myanmar," said the minister on the sidelines of a meeting with members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday (Oct 12).
However, he also said the implementation of the Myanmar government`s commitment must be continuously monitored.
Last Tuesday (Oct 11), Myanmar state television announced that the government would grant amnesty to 6,359 prisoners on Wednesday. However, it was not clear whether the amnesty also applied to political prisoners.(*)
