Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will host the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (COP 9) and the 23rd Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP) on Nov 21-25.

"Indonesia is enjoying another trust to host the international event. This reflects the world community`s confidence in us," Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya said here on Monday.

The COP/MOP meeting was expected to bring together 800 delegates from 196 state parties, international organizations and other related parties, he said.

He said the meeting would mainly discuss the addition of multilateral fund, the need of quarantine and pre-shipment inspection of methyl bromide and the sustainable mitigation of ozone-depleting substance.

One of the heated topics for debate at the meeting was proposals by Canada, Mexico and the United States as well as the federation of micronesia states for amendment to the Montreal Protocol. The proposed amendment dealt among others with provisions on the reduction of hydroflourocarbon (HFC) consumption, he said.

He said HFC did not destroy ozone layer but had the potential to raise global warming. HFC is greenhouse gas put in the Kyoto Protocol whose production and consumption is not controlled such was in the Montreal Protocol.

Indonesia would receive another grant of US$12 million between 2012 and 2018 for technology transfer and institutional capacity building in the effort to minimize damage to the ozone layer, he said.

The deputy for environmental destruction and climate change control to the environment minister Arief Yuwono said Indonesia had earlier received US$61 million in grants to reduce the use of ozone-depleting substance from 1993 to 2010.

He said Indonesia had ratified the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol through Presidential Decree No. 23 of 1992. In addition, it also had ratified amendment to the Montreal Protocol so that it must comply with provisions in the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol.
