Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Investigators from the South Jakarta Police Precinct here on Monday questioned several employees of Research In Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of Blackberry smartphones, over a stampede at a sales event recently.

Earlier, on Friday (Nov 25), dozens of people were injured or fainted amid a crowd of thousands in front of the Pacific Place shopping mall to buy Blackberry Bellagio smartphones that were offered at a 50-percent discounted price.

"The RIM employees were questioned today. They came to the South Jakarta police station to be questioned about last Friday`s incident," South Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Imam Sugiyanto said here on Monday.

Meanwhile, spokesman of the the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters Senior Commissioner Bahrudin Djafar said a RIM representative had s stated the company earlier contacted an event organizer to hold the Friday sales event at Pacific Place mall.

The event organizer, then, published information to the people about the sales promotion of the newest Blackberry series.

"About 3,000 to 5,000 people were flocking the mall area while the phones that would be displayed were only 1,000 units," he said. (*)
