The confirmation was made hours after Gbagbo`s lawyer Jean Gbougnon said the ex-leader might be transferred to the ICC by Wednesday.
The prosecutor had served an international arrest warrant on Gbagbo, the lawyer said.
Judiciary sources in Abidjan said Gbagbo left at 6:21 p.m. (1821 GMT) on a plane at the Korhogo airport in the northern part of the country, where he has been detained since arrested in April.
At least 80 associates of Gbagbo were detained on charges of murder, economic crimes and threatening state security.
Gbagbo was himself arrested together with his wife. They were both placed under house arrest on April 11 after a two-week bloody war in the economic capital Abidjan at the end of political impasse following the presidential run-off in November 2010.
The ICC was authorized to investigate the eventual war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during these confrontations which left at least 3,000 people dead. (*)
