Semarang, C Java (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono attended a national congress of the All-Indonesia Provincial Governments Association (APPSI) here on Friday evening.

At the three-day meeting which opened on Thursday, the President gave directives to 33 governors from throughout Indonesia.

Earlier, at a limited meeting at the Presidential Office last week discussing preparations for the congress, President Yudhoyono said he wanted all development programs in the regions connected with the central government`s development programs so that they would be useful for the public.

He said the connectivity of the central government`s and regional administrations` development programs could be discussed at the APPSI congress.

"Governors play a crucial role in ensuring that development programs in this country can be implemented well. The success of development programs at national level largely depends on the success of sectoral development. The closer the synergy (among relevant parties) the better the results will be," he said.

No matter how much money the country had allocated for the development sector at regional and national levels it would be fruitless if the development programs were not related to and did not support each other, he said.

"The success to promote the people`s living standard does not merely rely on the budget. The annual budget allocations, no matter how much, will not give us good results if the development programs are not implemented in a synergic, integrated and well-planned manner," he said.

Also present at the limited meeting discussing preparations for the APPSI congress were APPSI chief Fauzi Bowo, North Sulawesi Governor Sarundajang, and Central Java Governor Bibit Waluyo.(*)
