Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A Corruption Eradication Commmission (KPK) deputy chief said the commission`s investigation into the Bank Century bailout case may take years to complete.

KPK Deputy Chairman Bibit Samad Riyanto was commenting on calls from many quarters including House of Representatives (DPR) members on the KPK to speed up its investigation into the Rp6.7 trillion Bank Cenntury bailout case.

"The Century case must be investigated based on sufficient evidence. We cannot proceed merely based on theory." Bibit said here Thursday.

Therefore, he said, it was not possible for the KPK to comply with the public`s calls and "force" the case`s settlement. Moreover,

he added, the State Audit Board (BPK) had yet to come up with the results of its forensic audit on the Bank Century bailout.

In fact, the BPK had requested one more year`s time to complete its forensic audit, Bibit said, noting that in the USA, a similar audit could take no less than five years` time.

However, the KPK would continue its investigation while waiting for the results of the BPK`s forensic audit. "Nevertheless, we will keep on investigating the case," Bibit said.

"So we are not keeping the case in limbo. No, we are not. But the investigation takes time. We must find evidence of acts that clearly violated the law. We have no use for theories on whether the bank failure that led to the bailout would or would not have a systemic effect," he said. (*)
