"Do we all agree to let the Bank Century Case Supervisory Team continue with its work?" House Deputy Speaker Pramono Anung asked legislators attending a House plenary session on Friday. "We do," the floor replied in a loud chorus upon which Pramono struck his desk top with his gavel three times to seal the accord.
The unanimous decision came about after the various party factions presented their views on whether or not the team`s tenure needed to be extended. None of them objected to an extension but it was agreed to let the team continue to work until December 2012 at the latest.
The Team`s task is to monitor investigations by the state`s law enforcing agencies, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in particular, into the Bank Century bailout case which a House plenary session in March 2010 declared to be rife with indications of unlawful acts.
But after handling the case for many months, the KPK has so far not been able to uncover any wrongdoing in the process that led to the granting of Rp6.7 trillion in bailout funds from the state to the ailing bank.
In its latest explanation of the lack of progress in its investigation, the KPK said it was waiting for the results of a forensic audit on the bank`s fund flows being conducted by the State Audit Board (BPK). The latter agency was recently reported to have stated it needed more than the initially estimated time to complete its forensic audit.
