The two gunmen, riding on a motorcycle, fired an AK-47 rifle unprovoked at a number of local residents who were gathered in the coffee shop, Aceh Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Gustav Leo said here Monday.
Before fleeing on their motorcycle in southern direction, the two gunmen also fired at a house located about 50 meters from the coffee shop but nobody in the house was hurt.
In the coffee shop, a 37-year-old man, Suryadi, was killed, and another man, Kkaryanto (36), wounded. Karyanto was taken to a military hospital in Lhokseumawe for intensive medical care.
Aceh police have assigned a team led by their chief detective to investigate the incident.
Earlier, on New Year`s eve (Dec 31), unknown armed men killed four Aceh residents at two separate locations, three in Bireuen district and one in Banda Aceh district.
Gustav said the police were conducting intensive investigations into the shooting incidents that had begun to cause anxiety among the region`s community.
"These criminal acts by unidentified armed civilians cannot be tolerated, especially not because they taken people`s lives," he said.
