Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said the communication was necessary as Indonesia intended to post a diplomatic representative in Iraq.
"This has to do with our intention to post an ambassador in Bagdhad," Djoko said here Thursday.
The foreign minister had also been asked to communicate with the United Nations about present conditions in Iraq that had remained unstable after the departure of US forces.
The President had also directed Marty to keep monitoring the situation in Yemen where many Indonesians were studying.
Djoko said the Indonesian embassy in Yemen was continuously trying to persuade Indonesian citizens in the Middle Eastern country to return home but most of them were reluctant to do so.
So far, the embassy had succeeded in getting only five Indonesians to agree to return home for the sake of their own safety.
The President gave the instructions to the foreign minister at a limited cabinet meeting on Thursday which was also attended by Vice President Boediono.
The foreign minister was also requested to keep abreast of developments on the Korean peninsula following the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong il who was succeeded by his very young son , Kim Jong Un.
Observing developments on the Korean peninsula was important as a summit on nuclear power was to take place in South Korea next March, Djoko said.
At the cabinet meeting, Marty for his part reported the time frames of general elections to be held in several countries the outcomes of which could affect those countries` policies toward Indonesia.(*)
