Working under sponsorship of local assembling company PT Super Gasindo Jaya, the Rangkasbitung students were able to turn out 50 Tawon cars per month, Harisnen, head of the industrial section of Lebak district`s industry and trade office, said.
The Tawon with a twin-cylinder engine had already been tested on a trip from Rangkasbitung to Surabaya in East Java which it completed in 19 hours at a maximum speed of 100 km per hour.
The car`s engine was made in China but all the other parts , its interior and exterior, were locally produced and assembled by the students, he said. "I think, the Tawon can meet the expecations of many Indonesians," he added.
Meanwhile, Devi Arya Putri, personnel manager of PT Super Gasindo Jaya, said the company was quite proud about the students` creation.
The company was already receiving an increasing number of orders for the Tawon from government agencies, private parties and individuals.
A cooperative in Surabaya had even placed an order for 200 Tawon cars, she said.
The Tawon was now produced in three varieties, namely a model with an open space for cargo, a minivan model and a Tawon model. The Tawon model could carry more than three persons.
"All the varieties can run on premium gasoline or gas," she said.
Tawon cars carry price tags of Rp40 million-Rp60 million per unit, she said, adding the company would soon open a showroom in the Serang region. (*)
