Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Soeparno led a Hari Dharma Samudera (Ocean Services Day) anniversary on board the Indonesian warship Makassar-590 in the eastern shipping lane, Surabaya, Sunday.

The event with high-ranking naval officers, members of the Navy Women Association Jalasenastri, East Java government officials and veterans taking part, was marked with the spreading of flowers in the sea.

The agenda, on every January 15, was aimed to remember the services and sacrifices of the heroes who were killed in battles at sea, like the battle in Bali Strait, Sapudi Sea, Cirebon Sea, Sibolga Lake, and the Aru sea battle on January 15, 1962.

The Aru Sea battle was the peak of battle and patriotism of Indonesian maritime battle with the fall of Commodore Yos Soedarso and the sinking of KRI Macan Tutul.

On the occasion Admiral Soeparno handed souvenirs to a number of historians and heirs of Aru Sea fighters.

After the event, the navy chief saw off KRI Dewaruci training ship for a round the world trip for 277 says crossing four continents.

Earlier Admiral Soeparno signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to promote a "Wonderful Indonesia" program by way of KRI Dewaruci.(*)
