"If something happens in Papua, the news will spread as far as New York and Geneva, and the first person to be asked about is me, the president of Indonesia. That`s why I am obliged to make sure that all the systems in this country are running well,"Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asks Indonesian Military (TNI) and Police not to violate human rights when conducting their services in Papua province.
Speaking at an executive meeting of TNI and Police personnel at the Police Academy`s auditorium here on Friday, President Yudhoyono emphasized the need for all police and military personnel to respect human rights and avoid repressive actions.
"If something happens in Papua, the news will spread as far as New York and Geneva, and the first person to be asked about is me, the president of Indonesia. That`s why I am obliged to make sure that all the systems in this country are running well," said Yudhoyono.
The president said sovereignty and law in the country including in Papua must be respected and secured. He said the government had allocated a large amount of budget to develop Papua province and provide welfare to its people.
"However, it must be noted that separatist movement still exists in Papua. The presence of police and military personnel are needed there," he said.(*)
