Los Angeles (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - British songstress Adele dominated at the 54th annual Grammy Awards ceremony with a clean sweep of six top honors including album of the year for "21," her second album.

The up-and-coming British soul traditionalist`s unmatched win marked her return to the stage after she underwent vocal surgery in November and was forced to cancel her U.S. tour.

During the night, Adele performed her hit single "Rolling in the Deep" which she had written with Paul Epworth. The controlled and stirring stellar rendition was nothing but a testament to her remarkable comeback which has effectively reinstated her dominance at the music scene.

Adele, 23, was widely regarded as a heavy favorite who had received six nominations heading into the gala. She has eventually managed to sweep all the prizes on offer with ease.

The style-over-substance singer and songwriter also walked away from the event with best song and record for "Rolling in the Deep," best pop vocal album for "21," 2011`s top-selling album with 5.82 million copies, short-form music video for "Rolling in the Deep" and pop solo performance for "Someone Like You."

The singer also nabbed the song of the year, one of the most prestigious Grammys that have handed out during the night.

"I need to thank my doctors, I suppose, who brought my voice back," Adele told the star-studded audience when she was accepting her pop solo performance award.

"I can`t tell you how I feel about it. It`s been the most life-changing year," a tearful Adele said onstage after she was awarded the album of the year, which capped the night.

Bruno Mars who tied with Adele and alternative rock band Foo Fighters with six nods each in the leadup to the awards ceremony, went home empty-handed.

Foo Fighters also had a big night, bagging five Grammys including best hard rock/metal performance for "White Limo," best rock song and best rock performance for "Walk," best rock album for "Wasting Light," and best long-form music video for "Back and Forth."

"To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of making music is what`s most important," drummer Dave Grohl said when accepting the award.

Kanye West, who went into the Grammys with a leading seven nominations, collected four statuettes including best rap/sung collaboration for "All of the Lights" with Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Fergie; best rap song for "All of the Lights"; rap album for "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and best rap performance for "Otis," a collaboration with Jay-Z. He made no appearance at the event.

The Grammy for best new artist went to Bon Iver.

The major award event in the music scene unfolded in the dark shadow cast by the shocking death of pop diva Whitney Houston. The Recording Academy remembered Houston with a special tribute by Academy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson, who sang "I Will Always Love You" in honor of the pop superstar.

The event began with host, rapper-actor LL Cool J saying a prayer: "There is no way around this. We`ve had a death in our family and so at least for me, for me, the only thing that feels right, is to begin with a prayer for a woman we loved, for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston."

The organizers also showed a clip of Houston singing her classic hit "I Will Always Love You" at the Grammys back in 1994 to the audience, who responded with a standing ovation. The song, which was originally written by Dolly Parton, turned out to be Houston`s signature classic.

Houston, 48, was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Authorities believe Houston may have fallen asleep or lapsed into unconsciousness in a bathtub and drowned.

This year, the Recording Academy has cut the number of Grammy categories from 109 to 78, in a bid to streamline the awards show.
