The 11 million US dollars were payment for the shipment of 941.25 tons of nutmeg to Italy, Sanny Parengkuan. head of North Sulaeesi`s trade and industry office, said here Saturday.
The market for nutmeg as a spice in Italy was booming and therefore nutmeg shipments to that country were being made every month, said Hanny Wajong, head of foreign trade at North Sulawesi`s trade and industry office said.
North Sulawesi was exporting nutmeg not only to Italy but also to other countries so that the overall volume of its nutmeg exports was 1,835.45 tons worth 20.97 million US dollars in 2011.
With the income from nutmeg exports standing at 20.97 million US dollars, the commodity was the ninth biggest foreign exchange contributor to North Sulawesi in 2011.
