Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas Ham) is seeking action by the government to put an end to repeated violence in Aceh Province prior to the gubernatorial election.

"We want security officials to completely address the violent acts in the province before the gubernatorial election," Komnas Ham spokesman Ifdhal Kasim said here on Monday.

Ifdhal made the remark after a meeting with Aceh acting Governor Tarmizi A Karim to discuss preparations for the upcoming gubernatorial election in the province.

He noted that around 3.3 million people in Aceh would elect the governor and vice governor, along with 17 pairs of district heads and vice district heads during the upcoming April 9 election.

But, according to Ifdhal, at least 12 serious acts of violence involving firearms and explosives occurred throughout the province during the past five years.

Concerning the election, the National Commission on Human Rights spokesman also asked the Aceh provincial government to play its role in assuring that the elections be run without problems, to guarantee the rights of the local community are preserved.(*)
