Beirut (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - Lebanon will not recognize the opposition Syrian National Council even if the Arab League does, Lebanese Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour was quoted as saying by local media Sunday.

Lebanese media quoted Mansour as telling Russian TV that dialogue is the only means to ending the current political crisis in Syria.

In a so-called Friends of Syria meeting held Friday in Tunisia, some 70 representatives of foreign governments and international bodies, while divided on military actions against Syria, agreed to strengthen sanctions and isolation towards the Syrian government and forge closer ties with the opposition umbrella group Syrian National Council.

According to Mansour, Lebanon would be harmed at various levels should the government decide to implement sanctions against its biggest neighbor.

There had been progress by the Syrian government to implement reforms, Mansour said, referring to the positive steps taken by Damascus in terms of achieving political pluralism and amending the constitution.

Syrians on Sunday took to about 14,185 polling stations nationwide to vote in a national referendum for the country`s new draft constitution, which officials say will transit Syria to political pluralism.(*)
