Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan will lead an Indonesian trade mission to a number of Latin American countries, including Brazil, Chile, and Peru from March 12 to 16 as part of efforts to diversify the market for Indonesian exports.

Market penetration through trade mission is one of the effective ways to open and develop trade networks and establish partnership with importers or buyers in target countries, the Trade Ministry said in a press statement issued on Sunday.

In addition, the trade mission is also expected to create a chance for Indonesia to establish mutually beneficial trade cooperation with the three Latin American countries, particularly in the fields of energy security, food security and environment security in the long run, the statement said.

Brazil, Chile and Peru had been chosen as the target for the trade mission in view of their growing economies, bilateral trade with Indonesia, and an upward trend of Indonesia`s exports to and imports from the countries in the past five years, the statement said.

While in Brazil, Gita Wirjawan is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, and Development, Industry and Foreign Trade Minister Fernando Pimentel.

The Indonesian trade minister will meet with Trade and Tourism Minister Jose Luis Silva Martinot during his stay in Peru.

In 2010 Indonesia saw a deficit of US$1.78 billion in its trade with Brazil and a deficit of US$190 million in its trade with Chile but enjoyed a surplus of US$73 million in its trade with Peru.

Indonesia exported goods worth US$1.52 billion to and imported goods worth US$1.71 billion from Brazil in 2010.

Indonesia`s exports to Peru reached US$94 million and its imports from the latter stood at US$21 million in 2010.
