PLN had originally projected its coal consumption this year at 54 million tons but later revised downward its coal consumption forecast to 43 million tons, head of PT PLN`s coal division Helmi Najamudin said here on Monday.
"So it falls 20 percent," he said.
The coal consumption forecast of 43 million tons included that of private power developers, he said.
In the first quarter of 2012, PLN`s coal consumption had reached 10 million tons. The figure was expected to increase to 12 million tons in the second quarter, along with the operation of power plants in Tarahan, Paiton and Cirebon, he said.
"But we predict the coal consumption will only reach 43 million tons until the end of this year," he said.
Earlier, the working meeting between the House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission VII and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik agreed on new timeline for the operation of coal-fired power plants, and a cut in operation and maintenance costs that will raise electricity subsidy by Rp17.61 trillion.
