DARWIN, Australia, Mar. 26 (ANTARA/Medianet International-AsiaNet) --

The Darwin Convention Centre is eagerly awaiting the arrival of SilkAir's regular services to Darwin International Airport and Centre General Manager, Malu Barrios will be on hand to welcome the airline’s inaugural flight on March 26th.

Darwin, capital of Australia's Northern Territory, has strategic access to the world's most exciting new economies. It is predicted that the city will be the second fastest growing in the country over the next 5 years, with 4.2% growth, behind only to Queensland. (Source: Access Deloitte Economics)

While it has been serviced in the past by major international carriers, Darwin has relied mainly on Jetstar's DWN-SNG service for the past three years. SilkAir will now make business class available on four scheduled return flights per week between Darwin and Singapore, the heart of its extensive Southeast Asian network.

Ms Barrios said SilkAir brings an important new service for the business traveller to Darwin and the Convention Centre.

"Both Darwin and the Convention Centre will benefit from the improved access SilkAir will provide,” said Ms Barrios. “Our city's robust economy, distinct destination appeal, and strategic location contribute to the economic vitality of the Territory, attracting major investment interest internationally and nationally. The Convention Centre has demonstrated its world-class capabilities with its achievements in its first four years of operations. This new service will also make Darwin more attractive to international associations considering hosting their event in the city."

SilkAir is a subsidiary of the highly regarded Singapore Airlines and has a codeshare agreement with Virgin Australia. The airline flies a fleet of Airbus A319-100 which is being progressively upgraded to the A320-200. The airline won successive Best Regional Airline: Southeast Asia in 2009 and 2010 in the World Airlines Awards and in October was awarded the Regional Airline ofthe Year by the Centre for Aviation (CAPA).
