"At the time they were suspected of having pelted stones at police officers and therefore they have been arrested," the police command spokesman, Senior Commissioner Rikwanto, said.
He said 32 people had been secured consisting of 29 students and three sympathizers, namely Ariyanto, a courier, Rio Revaldi, an unemployed, and Ali Sadikin, a scavenger.
The students are from various universities in Indonesia such as those in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Jakarta, Ciledug in Tangerang in the province of Banten, Citeureup in Bogor, West Java, and Cirebon, West Java.
The director of crime investigation, Senior Commissioner Toni Harmanto, said the police have not yet named them suspects.
"They are still being questioned. They will later be classified according to the roles they have played," he said.
Toni said the investigators might possibly charge them with breaking Article 170 of the Criminal Code on violence/vandalism affecting goods and people.
Several demonstrations occurred in the capital city on Tuesday following a planned fuel price hike as of April 1. (*)
