We ask all ASEAN members to call for the EU and the US to lift the sanctions on Myanmar," Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said.Pnom Penh, Cambodia (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has called upon ASEAN members to jointly act to urge the European Union and United States to lift its sanctions on Myanmar, a minister said.
"We think it`s time to make a concrete move. We ask all ASEAN members to call for the EU and the US to lift the sanctions on Myanmar," Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said on Tuesday before the opening ceremony of the 20th ASEAN Summit in Pnom Penh, Cambodia.
Marty said ASEAN`s urging the lifting of sanctions on Myanmar was meant to be a signal of support for the people in the country that is now evolving into a democracy.
Marty noted that April 26, when the ASEAN Foreign Affairs Ministerial Meeting takes place in Brunei Darussalam, would be the appropriate time for ASEAN to deliver its appeal to the EU and the US.
The summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh from April 2 to 4.
The 20th meeting plans to discuss, among other issues, the ASEAN Declaration of One Community, One Destiny, the Declaration of ASEAN leaders on a Narcotics-Free ASEAN in 2015 and the Concept on Moderate Global Movement. (*)
