Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The ASEAN Committee on Consumer Protection (ACCP) has published the ASEAN Consumer Complaints leaflet to support the ongoing process of economic integration and ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) building, especially in the area of consumer protection.

The leaflet contains information on hotlines and national focal points in all ASEAN Member States (AMSs) for consumer complaints. It also seeks to ensure better regional awareness, understanding, and providing information among both ASEAN and non-ASEAN consumers, the ASEAN Secretariat said in a press statement here on Tuesday.

"This leaflet shows our efforts and commitment towards ensuring better consumer protection within the ASEAN region, taking into account the existing consumer protection mechanism in the ASEAN Member States," Mahani Tan Abdullah, chairperson of the ACCP said.

The information in the leaflet, which will be distributed simultaneously to the public in all ten AMSs, will be useful not only for ASEAN consumers but also for tourists who visit the AMSs.

"Such information will enhance consumer confidence while dealing with businesses in the ASEAN market. It is hoped that this will also encourage ASEAN traders to engage in fair and ethical practices when dealing with consumers. The ACCP is committed to coming up with more initiatives towards improving the consumer welfare of the people of ASEAN," Mahani added.

Copies of the leaflets have recently been printed by the ASEAN Secretariat and distributed to the ACCP focal points in each AMS.

The leaflets will be available for distribution at the entry points in individual AMSs and at other locations, such as hotels and department stores.

The same leaflets would also be distributed at the official ASEAN meetings. The electronic version of the leaflet can be found on the ASEAN website (www.asean.org), on the ACCP website on consumer redress issues, and on the official websites of the offices or agencies in charge of consumer protection rights in individual AMSs.(*)
