"Presumably, the human trafficking actors are now seeking their victims using the social media such as Facebook, Twitter and many more," said the secretary of the Women Empowerment and Children Protection Ministry, Sri Danti, here on Monday.
Appealing to all parties to monitor the social media misuse, especially parents, Sri said: "Parents and the community should supervise their children so as not to be persuaded by the traffickers to obtain more victims."
Support from all concerned is also needed in this task. The government has already formed a task force for the prevention of human-trafficking.
Sri noted: "In this case, the government cannot work alone and needs the help of all stakeholders from community organizations and parents."
According to the Indonesia Police data, there were 373 trafficking cases involving 440 adults and 192 children during 2009-11, which resulted in the arrest of 450 human traffickers.
"There are many more trafficking cases that have been reported or appearing in the media," Sri added. The task force should, therefore, be more proactive in handling trafficking.
In addressing human-trafficking cases, the Indonesian government has enacted Law no.21 of 2007 on Eradication of Human Trafficking. Besides, Government Regulation Number 09 Year 2008 on Integrated Procedures and Mechanisms services for witnesses or the Victims of Human Trafficking Crime covers as a legal umbrella for preventing and handling the crime.
These legal instruments are equipped with Presidential Decree No. 69 of 2008 on the establishment of the Task Force for Crime Prevention and Treatment of Human Trafficking.
