A spokeswoman told AFP that the "grounds of the German embassy" had sustained damage but that "as far as we know (there have been) no injuries."
Suicide bombers struck across Afghanistan in coordinated attacks.
As well as explosions and gunfire in the diplomatic enclave of the capital, militants also took over a hotel and tried to enter parliament.
The United States embassy in Kabul was in lockdown, a spokesman said.
All staff were accounted for and safe, with no reports of injuries, said spokesman Gavin Sundwall.
Taliban insurgents claimed the attacks in Kabul, with a spokesman saying by text message that "a lot of suicide bombers" were involved.
Outside the capital, attackers also targeted government buildings in Logar province, the airport in Jalalabad, and a police facility in the town of Gardez in Paktia province.
