Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked the eastern Indonesian town of Ternate early Friday, but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The quake, which struck at 12.23am Western Indonesian Time, was centred 101 kilometres northwest of Ternate, North Maluku province, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced in its official website on Friday.

Earlier, on Thursday at 10.46pm Western Indonesian Time, a 5.1 magnitude quake had shaken the neighbouring West Papua province. The epicentre of the quake was in the sea, about 92 km southeast of Manokwari town in West Papua province, at a depth of 10 km.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

North Maluku and West Papua provinces lie at the meeting point of the country`s two main chains of volcanoes. (*)
