The epicenter of the quake which struck at 09.54 p.m. Western Indonesian Time was in the sea 227 km northwest of Southeast Maluku at a depth of 144 km beneath the sea level, the agency said in its official website.
However, the temblor did not trigger a tsunami, it said.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
Maluku lies at the meeting point of the country`s two main chains of volcanoes.
