Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook the eastern Indonesian district of Southeast Maluku on Monday night, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) said.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 09.54 p.m. Western Indonesian Time was in the sea 227 km northwest of Southeast Maluku at a depth of 144 km beneath the sea level, the agency said in its official website.

However, the temblor did not trigger a tsunami, it said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Maluku lies at the meeting point of the country`s two main chains of volcanoes.
