Nicolas Sarkozy`s defeat in the French presidential elections shows the defeat of his wrong polices and we hope that the polices of Francois Hollande will correct past wrong approaches.Tehran (ANTARA News/AFP) - Tehran on Monday voiced hope that Francois Hollande`s presidency will open up a "new era" in ties between Iran and France, whose former president was one of the most vocal critics of Iran`s nuclear programme.
"We hope a new era will open up based on the existing potential between the two nations" and their "historic relations," Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was quoted as saying by IRNA news agency.
"Nicolas Sarkozy`s defeat in the French presidential elections shows the defeat of his wrong polices and we hope that the polices of Francois Hollande will correct past wrong approaches," Mehmanparast said.
He noted Sarkozy`s "hostility towards the Islamic republic of Iran" and said he was defeated in the French election because he aligned his policies on those of the United States.
France under Sarkozy`s presidency has been one of the most vocal critics of Iran`s nuclear program and Paris pushed for the imposition of sanctions against Teheran`s nuclear drive and its human rights records.
During his election campaign, Hollande said if he were elected France would remain firm with Iran namely over its nuclear program "which represents a vital danger for Israel and peace in the world."
Hollande, the 57-year-old Socialist won power Sunday in a close race against incumbent right-winger Sarkozy.
