The car would be designed and fully assembled at the institute, but the vehicle's battery would be imported from China.Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) will unveil an electric car at the science and technology creativity carnival on the 17th National Technology Awakening Day (Hakteknas).
The institute`s rector, Akhmaloka, said here on Wednesday that the car would be designed and fully assembled at the institute, but the vehicle's battery would be imported from China.
"ITB experts from the faculty of electrical and informatics engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, as well as fine arts and design will be involved in the process," he added.
"We will produce our own battery for the car in the future by involving the institute's faculty of mathematics and natural sciences, as well as high-technology industries," Akhmaloka stated.
"Over the past two months, ITB has been collaborating with state-owned arms manufacturer PT Pindad, which also provided the workshop site," he added.
Running on Chinese batteries, the six-seated electric vehicle can cover 100 metres on a single charge.
"The fibre-bodied car has been designed as a knock-down vehicle, which can converted into a two-or four-seater with accordingly larger stowage capacity," Akhmaloka noted.
ITB Deputy Rector for Research and Innovation Wawan Gunawan A Kadir stated that the retail price for the electric car if mass-produced would be in the range of Rp80-150 million.
"The electric car will patented under the name of ITB. It is designed differently from the other national electric car, which is being made by the Bandung Institute of Technology in collaboration with five other colleges under the coordination of the Ministry of Education and Culture as well as the Ministry of Research and Technology," he said.
ITB`s electric car will be unveiled at the science and technology creativity carnival on Wednesday at 1.30 pm, and it is scheduled to be paraded around Bandung city`s major roads.
Among other participants in the carnival are PT Pindad, PT LEN, the Indonesian Assessment and Application of Technology Agency (BPPT), and Bandung`s SMK 8.(*)
