Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government has implemented its asymmetric decentralization policy across a number of provinces in a bid to support the diversity of Indonesia, according to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

"The government has applied asymmetric decentralization in the provinces of Yogyakarta, Aceh, Papua, and West Papua," the President said in his state of the nation address before the Parliament here on Thursday, a day before the 67th anniversary of Indonesian independence.

He added that the government wanted to make its ongoing decentralization efforts more effective in order to further improve Indonesian people`s welfare.

"The government will continue to support development activities in Aceh, promoting it as a province with peace, diplomacy, and democracy," the head of state said.

"The history of Aceh clearly shows how conflict can be overcome through diplomacy and democracy," President Yudhoyono noted.

He pointed out that the government paid special attention to implementation of development programs in Eastern Indonesian Region (KTI).

"Different regions have different characteristics, so the government wants to ensure just and equitable development in the Eastern Indonesian Region," the President explained.

"This effort can be successful if regional governments use the funds properly," he added.
