"It can be one of the options for mutual cooperation among us."
Vladivostok, Russia (ANTARA News) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono emphasized that economic cooperation should continue to develop and strengthen the vision and cooperative ties among countries in the Asia Pacific and Pacific Rim regions (APEC)

President Yudhoyono, speaking at the APEC CEO Forum here on Saturday, said that enthusiastic economic cooperation could make the countries stand ready during the economic global crisis and prevent several member countries of APEC from failing due to the crisis.

"We all know that every business needs efficiency for the flow of goods, workers and services. Therefore, here I underline the importance of connectivity because it will reduce high economic costs and make the region more competitive," Yudhoyono said as a keynote speaker at the Forum, being held at Russky Island, Vladivostok.

He added that member countries should be more careful and able to anticipate some economic indicators, such as increases in world food prices, the decline of energy supplies and unstable global economic conditions.

Furthermore, President Yudhoyono said APEC should strengthen regulations on investments, especially on infrastructure development sectors in developing countries.

"Thus, the firm regulation of investments can encourage capital demand and technology from developing countries. It can be one of the options for mutual cooperation among us," he added.

Investment and consumption were the main strategy to create economic growth, he said. Therefore, positive growth would never be realized if there was no clear regulation in the region, added Yudhoyono.

Russia has joined as an APEC member since 1998, and this is the first time Russia has hosted the Summit. APEC was created in 1989 to promote economic cooperation among countries in the Asia Pacific and Pacific Rim regions, such as Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Indonesia is to host the 2013 APEC Summit.
