"We support the right of every country to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. However, we also want Iran to respect the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," Marty said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will continue to support calls for the resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through peaceful dialogue, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa.

"We support the right of every country to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. However, we also want Iran to respect the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," he said during a meeting with the Commission-I of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Wednesday.

According to Marty, it is necessary for Iran to cooperate with the international community under the framework of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), "particularly with regard to the issue of transparency so it is not posed as a problem at the United Nations".

"Indonesia continues to encourage Iran and other key countries ,the permanent members of the UN Security Council, to hold peaceful dialogue on the nuclear issue," he said.

According to an IAEA report, Marty added, the Iranian nuclear issue is technical in nature and therefore IAEA is the appropriate forum to discuss the problem.

"Confidence-building measures should be implemented through dialogue, under the framework of IAEA, for a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the issue," he stated.

Earlier, Western countries accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear programme. Iran rejected the claims, stating that its nuclear programme was meant for peaceful purposes. (*)
