In essence, we agreed to settle them."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo met with Minister of Public Works Djoko Kirmanto and Minister of Public Housing Djan Farid here on Wednesday to discuss normalization of river Ciliwung that passes through the capital city.

"In the meeting just now we discussed problems linked to Ciliwung. In essence, we agreed to settle them," Joko Widodo who is popularly called Jokowi in short said after the meeting at the public works ministry building.

Djoko Kirmanto said river Ciliwung has now become very narrow and therefore cannot accommodate rain water and so must be widened.

"River Ciliwung has been very narrow and so it must be normalized by widening it according to a size we would later determine. People living along it must also be relocated to assure orderliness," he added.

Djoko said for their relocation rented public apartments could be built on a location not far away from the river.

Public Housing Minister Djan Farid meanwhile said his office plans to build 22 towers of public apartments each containing 900 units of housing.

"We will build 22 towers of rented public apartments in a U-form and each tower would have 900 units of housing located 15 meters from the first deck of the water surface," he said.

He said the public apartment complex would be completed with various public and social facilities such as health care centers, markets, schools and open and green areas for people to interact.

The minister said he estimated the project that would be started in January next year would take two years to finish in 2014.
