"We have been working at the Constitutional Court for quite some time now, and President Yudhoyono has never tried to control the MK," Mahfud said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Constitutional Court (MK) Chairman Mahfud MD has stated that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono never intervened in the affairs of the Constitutional Court.

"We have been working at the Constitutional Court for quite some time now, and President Yudhoyono has never tried to control the MK," he told the press after being received by the head of state on Wednesday.

Therefore, Mahfud said, the MK had been able to operate independently while addressing disputes arising in the country.

He expressed satisfaction that the MK was being trusted as an independent judiciary institution.

Mahfud also praised the constitutional judges for working independently and helping make the Constitutional Court a reliable and respectable institution in the country.

The MK chairman and four other constitutional judges were received by President Yudhoyono at his office on Wednesday.

Speaking to the press after being received by the President, Mahfud said: "We have come to the presidential office to report that our first task will be completed in 2013."

"I went to the House of Representatives (DPR) office yesterday to report the same thing and now I have come to the presidential office," he added.

Mahfud noted that no political issues were discussed during the meeting with President Yudhoyono.

"Political issues were not discussed, but it is the legal responsibility of the constitutional judges to inform the President if there is any political problem," he said.

The meeting started at 10am on Wednesday morning and lasted for 35 minutes.

During the meeting, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto, Minister/State Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Law and Human Rights deputy minister Denny Indrayana, and Cabinet secretary Dipo Alam. (*)
