Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The 4th Ministerial Conference on the Role of Women in the Development of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has seen a commitment from the members to empower women, by encouraging them to be a part of the workforce, as per the Jakarta Declaration.

"The member states of the OIC are committed to empowering women by encouraging them to be a part of the workforce," said Linda Gumelar, Indonesia`s Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection, here on Thursday.

The Jakarta Declaration is focused on creating an environment that strengthens the role and participation of women in the workforce.

"The OIC`s member states should come up with ways to get women into the workforce by ensuring that their basic rights like education and healthcare are met," said Gumelar.

The Jakarta Declaration also focuses on achieving gender equality. As per the Jakarta Declaration, the member states should help Palestine overcome the current crisis. In addition, the member states should enhance the capabilities of the Palestinian women so that they can contribute to the development of Palestine.

"During the conference, the member states showed their support for Palestine in its aspiration to become a non-member observer state of the United Nations. We hope this move will help both Israel and Palestine to resolve their issues," said Gumelar.

The Minister also urged the member states to follow up on the implementation of the Jakarta Declaration (with regard to women empowerment efforts), particularly in Somalia, Gabon and Mozambique.

"It is important for the member states to supervise the implementation of the Jakarta Declaration," said Gumelar.

The 5th Ministerial Conference on the Role of Women in the Development of the OIC will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2014.
