"The law will be revised and made more effective and simpler," the Head of Information and Public Relations Centre at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Gatot Dewa Broto said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will revise the Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE) Law in 2013.
"Line 2 of Article 27 will be revised. It is with regard to humiliation," said the Head of Information and Public Relations Centre at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Gatot Dewa Broto, on Tuesday.
The public had called for a revision of the ITE Law.
"Rp1 billion fine and six years in prison are considered too severe," he said.
The punishment will be revised based on the ITE Law and the Criminal Code (KUHP). According to the ITE Law, the punishment for not abiding by Line 2 of Article 27 constitutes six years in prison. As per the Criminal Code, the punishment for not abiding by Line 2 of Article constitutes nine months in prison.
Dewa Broto said the need for a change in the law arose after Prita Mulyasari, a working mother, made a complaint to a hospital in Jakarta and threatened the hospital with the ITE Law.
"The law will be revised and made more effective and simpler," he said.
Moreover, Dewa Broto added that the revised ITE Law will be in line with the development of information technology.
The ministry will also prepare a draft regulation on broadcasting and the convergence of telecommunications. The ministry will look into the regulation on its budget too.(*)
