"Lawsuits from foreign institutions have increased and they have always sought weaknesses in our legal system in their lawsuits in New York and Singapore," Boediono said.
Jakarta (Antara News) - Vice President Boediono has called for readiness for possible lawsuits from home and abroad in line with current globalization.

"Lawsuits from foreign institutions have increased and they have always sought weaknesses in our legal system in their lawsuits in New York and Singapore," he said when opening a national working meeting of the ministry of justice and human rights here on Friday.

The meeting was also attended by coordinating minister for people`s welfare Agung Laksono, minister of justice and human rights Amir Syamsuddin, home affairs minister Gamawan Fauzi, minister of energy and mineral resources Jero Wacik, minister of fisheries and marine resources, Cicip Sutardjo, national police chief General Timur Pradopo and Attorney General Basrief Arief.

Boediono said due to globalization more products from Indonesia have been circulating abroad and many investment agreements have also been made with foreign companies in the country.

To meet possible lawsuits overseas he said it was important for the ministry of justice and human rights to have "friends" abroad that could help in case Indonesia had to deal with lawsuits there.

"The term `friends` here must be understood positively as those who are knowledgeable about efforts and ways that have to be taken when dealing with lawsuits that could damage Indonesia`s reputation," he said.

"If the ministry of justice and human rights has friends efforts in lawsuit settlements were expected to be able to give optimum results," he said.

He said the ministry of justice and human rights also must know about the "combat field" well to deal with the lawsuits and so it must also have personnel with special knowledge and capability in the affairs.

"The bet is huge if we lose, can be in the trillion rupiahs," he warned..

Boediono on the occasion expressed appreciation to the ministry of justice and human rights for the achievements that it has made so far such as in passport and immigration management and company registration.

"I have monitored the ministry`s performance and I saw a lot of progress has been made," he said.(*)
