"I personally, as the co-chair, do suggest the third option, which is a new format (for the Post-2015 Development Agenda)," Yudhoyono said when officially opening a national consultation on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
The head of state preferred to chose the first option, namely to continue and strengthen the MDG targets or the second option which is adding one or two more targets in the MDGs.
Over the past a few years, developing nations have been using the eight targets of the MDGs as the standard for the achievement of their development.
If the targets are changed, it could cause confusion, he said.
For the first option, among the targets which need to be strengthened for instance is on the environmental preservation, he said.
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced in New York on May 9, 2012, that he invited President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom to co-chair High Level Panel of Eminent Persons to work on the post-2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Panel is part of the Secretary-General`s post-2015 initiative mandated by the 2010 MDG Summit. UN Member States have called for open, inclusive consultations involving the civil society, the private sector, academia and research institutions from all regions, in addition to the UN system, to advance the development framework beyond 2015.
Expected to be achieved by 2015, the MDGs comprise eight goals: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development.(*)
