"... AU is believed to have violated the articles."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s ruling Democrat Party`s chief Anas Urbaningrum was named suspect in connection with a corruption case here on Friday and banned to travel abroad.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Anas Urbaningrum suspect for allegedly receiving a gift or making a pledge linked to the planning and implementation of a sports complex project in Hambalang, West Java, KPK spokesman Johan Budi said in a press conference at the KPK Building.

"According to an investigation order issued today on February 22 the suspect is charged with violating Article 12 paragraph a or b or Article 11 of Law Number 31 of 1999 later changed to Law Number 20 of 2001 on corruption eradication," he said.

The Articles carry a life sentence or a minimum sentence of four to 20 years in jail and a fine of up to Rp1 billion.

"KPK has found two pieces of evidence to conclude that AU is believed to have violated the articles," Johan Budi said.

He said all KPK leaders agreed to name AU suspect. "All agreed to name AU suspect. So, it is not true that KPK leaders have blocked AU`s naming as suspect. It was a unanimous decision," he said.

He said the investigation order was signed by Bambang Widjojanto but the draft was signed by all five KPK leaders namely Adnan Pandu Praja, Zulkarnai, Bambang Widjojanto, Busyro Muqoddas and Abraham Samad.

Johan did not tell the kind of gift that Anas has received or the pledge that he has made while he was a member of the House of Representatives in 2009-2014.

Anas has so far been reported to have been involved in the Hambalang case.

He was last questioned as a witness in the case on July 4, 2012. At the time he denied about his meeting with a man from PT Adhi Karya, the winning bidder of the project.

The former ruling party`s treasurer, M Nazaruddin, who had been convicted in another corruption case has said that PT Adhi Karya has given Anas Rp100 billion through his closest friend, Machfud Suroso, who is also a member of the board of commissioners of PT Dutsari Citralaras, a sub-contractor at the Hambalang project.

The money was given as a success fee following the company`s success in the bidding for the project in 2010.

Nazaruddin also said that Anas also received a car from PT Adhi Karya worth Rp800 million in exchange for his help to win the project while Anas was a member of the House of Representatives in 2009.

Anas through his lawyer, Firman Wijaya, denied it saying that Anas bought the car from Nazaruddin in August 2009 and paid it in installments but later sold it and gave the money to Nazaruddin in July 2010.
