"Rupiah strengthening was curbed by less encouraging Chinese data such as in the consumption sector."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian currency rupiah gained against the US dollar on Wednesday morning with positive sentiment from the United States.

The currency traded at the level of 9,690 from 9,695 per US dollar in interbank transaction.

Improvement of the US economy notably in the labor sector gave a positive sentiment but rupiah rising trend was curbed by Chinese economic performance being not up to expectation, Trust Securities` analyst Reza Priyambada said.

"Rupiah strengthening was curbed by less encouraging Chinese data such as in the consumption sector," Reza said

The fall of euro after rating agency Fitch International downgraded Italian debts from A- (A minus) to BBB+ (triple B plus) with negative outlook, also had bad effect on rupiah, he said.

Meanwhile, Samuel Sekuritas` market observer Lana Soelistianingsih said the USD labor market is still showing encouraging improvement, adding payroll data showed an increase of 119,000 in the number of jobs in January.

"The increase means smaller unemployment rate in that country," she added.

Despite the dollar strengthening, the rupiah has been relatively stable on protective measure by Bank Indonesia, she said.
