"I do not want and do not like any more violence to occur in Yogyakarta," Hamengku Buwono, who is also the chief of the traditional Yogyakarta Sultanate, said.
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The governor of Yogyakarta special autonomous province, Hamengku Buwono X, has called on the local people to maintain security in the region and prevent recurrence of violence in the future.

"I do not want and do not like any more violence to occur in Yogyakarta," Hamengku Buwono, who is also the chief of the traditional Yogyakarta Sultanate, said here on Tuesday.

He expressed deep concern over the raid at a penitentiary in Cebongan in the Sleman district last Saturday that led to the shootings of four police detainees to death there.

Sultan Hamengku Buwono X said Yogyakarta has been known as a city of students and a cultural center and so all problems that happened in the region must be solved through dialogs and not violence.

He called on all students from outside the region especially from East Nusa Tenggara not to be worried staying in the region after the incident.

The four killed in the raid at the penitentiary in Sleman hailed from East Nusa Tenggara. They were put in the penitentiary by the police for allegedly being involved in the death of a member of an army`s special force Kopassus in a fight in Hugo`s Cafe in Sleman several days ago.

"I have coordinated intensively with the authorities because I have the responsibility to assure the security of students in Yogyakarta. I have also coordinated with the governor of East Nusa Tenggara in connection with the incident," Sultan said.

So, students from outside the region must not be worried but he also appealed to them to conduct good communication with local people as well as with other ethnic group members.

"I hope they could conduct good communication with local people as well as people from other ethnic groups so that harmonious relations among them would be built," he said.

Regarding the perpetrators in the shooting incident Sultan rejected to comment saying he would not make assumptions to prevent possible bias and would wait for the results of the investigation by the police.

"I hope the case would be thoroughly investigated and judicially processed. The task of the police is to unveiling the case," he said.(*)
