Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - Minister of Justice and Human Rights Amir Syamsudin said 11 special forces members behind the killing of four detainees in a penitentiary in Yogyakarta would be tried in a military court.

"There are laws regulating who have to be tried in civilian and military courts. As the law for them is available we will then use it," he said after opening the 7th national congress of the Indonesian Bar Associaion here on Friday.

He said he hoped the trial would be open and transparent so that the issue would not drag on.

He appreciated the army`s decision to announce the involvement of the Kopassus members in the case as a good step.

"I happened to be in Yogyakarta when the incident happened and I have called for a speedy, honest and transparent process of investigation and it has been okay as it has been done quite fast," he said.

He said further process was awaited and "certainly the military trial must be transparent so that the issue would not drag on to cause suspicions."

The minister said that the military court has so far been transparent. "If it still impresses it is not yet open may be it is just because of a lack of publication," he said.

The minister hoped the trial of the 11 Kopassus members would be honest to prevent suspicions.

The four killed in the penitentiary were suspected thugs that had killed a Kopassus member at Hugo`s Cafe several days before the attack on March 23.

The chief investigator of the case, Brigadier Untung K Yudhoyono said when announcing the perpetrators that the attack was done spontaneously our of solidarity.(*)
