Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia congratulated Malaysia on Monday for the successful general elections on Sunday.

"We congratulate the Malaysian people for their success in holding the general elections," the country`s foreign minister, Marty Natalegawa, said.

He said countries in the Asian region monitored the elections process not only during the campaign period but also their results.

Marty said he hoped the relations between Indonesia and Malaysia would grow further following the elections that had given the National Front another victory of more than 50 percent of 222 parliamentary seats contested.

"First and foremost we congratulate the Malaysian people for their enthusiasm to participate in the general elections and we believe the results would deepen the relations between Indonesia and Malaysia," he said.

"What happened in Malaysia would be one of the stepping stones for strengthening democratic transition in the region (ASEAN)," he added.

The turnout in the elections this year has been the biggest with 80 percent of the registered voters totaling 12,992,661 using their right.(*)
