Pandeglang, Banten (ANTARA News) - The district court in Pandeglang, Banten, sentenced a Pakistani national to six years in jail on Tuesday for trying to smuggle people to Australia.

The court also ordered the Pakistani, Saadhat Ali (49), to pay a fine of Rp500 million or spend two more months in jail.

The sentence read out by chief judge Sri Endang was lighter than the prosecutor`s demand for 11 years in jail and a fine of Rp500 million or six months more in jail.

The judges in their verdict stated that the defendant had been proven guilty of violating the immigration law.

Saadhat Ali was caught by police at Villa Ariesta in Carita, Pandeglang, Banten.

Police received information on September 18 that a number of illegal immigrants staying at a villa in Puncak, Bogor, West Java, would be smuggled to Australia.

They then followed them until they arrived at Villa Ariesta at night where they later arrested him and others.

Besides Saadhat the police also caught Indonesian citizen Lina Molina and three illegal immigrants from Afghanistan and another one from Sri Lanka.(*)
