With regard to the incident Yudhoyono also called on all ministries concerned to review all aspects of safety in the mining industries in the country.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono has again called for a thorough investigation of the incident at a US-owned mining company PT Freeport in Tembagapura, Papua, recently.

"We know a company like Freeport has has a good safety system but because of the incident we would still conduct thorough investigation with regard to finding the cause of the incident," he said at his office here on Monday.

President Yudhoyono said it was hoped a lesson could be taken from the results of the investigation to prevent recurrence in the future.

With regard to the incident he also called on all ministries concerned to review all aspects of safety in the mining industries in the country.

He underlined the importance of supervision on work security and safety to assure workers` safety.

In connection with the incident at PT Freeport he said the government was ready to help the company in its efforts to evacuate the victims.

He said he had already communicated with PT Freeport and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) with regard to knowing latest conditions in the field.

According to a field worker it is hoped evacuation process could be completed in the next one or two days` time.

President Yudhoyono said that the incident at the Freeport mine facility was different from that in Chile several years ago.

In Chile the workers were trapped in a room and could still sustain with the existing logistics while those at Freeport the workers had been buried by debris from a collapsed roof.

Fourteen people had been found dead while ten had been saved following the collapse of an underground training facility at the Freeport mine on May 14 while 18 others were still unaccounted for.(*)
