The final decision-maker about the fate of Syria is the Syrian people."
Tehran, June 18 (Antara/SANA-0ANA) - Iranian President-elect Hassan Rouhani said that the ``wide elections in Iran proved the exceptional democracy there and the victory of the Iranian people. ``

In his first press conference held in Tehran on Monday, the Iranian president said the Iranians` participation in the elections was effective and "ushered in a new chapter" which proves, he says, that the Iranian people have triumphed.

On the crisis in Syria, Rouhani said that only the Syrian people are to decide their own future, indicating that his country opposes terrorism in Syria and foreign interference in the Syrian affairs.

"The final decision-maker about the fate of Syria is the Syrian people," he added.

"We oppose terrorism and that other countries want to interfere in Syria's internal affairs," Rouhani pointed out.

He expressed hope peace and tranquility would be restored in Syria with the help of regional and world countries and that the demands of the people would be met there.

Rouhani added that "the Syrian government is legitimate and legal and has to stay in place until elections are held."

"It is up to the Syrians to decide who will represent them in the next elections," said Rohani.
