Atambua (ANTARA News) - Heavy rain had triggered widespread flooding in the regency of Malaka of East Nusatenggara. At least 80 houses in the village of Umatoos in the the sub-district of Malaka Barat were inundated forcing the people to move to safer areas.

"This is the second flooding after one last week," Malaka Regent Herman Naiulu said here on Tuesday.

The flood water as high as one to two meters put 63 villages below water in the regency in the border area with East Timor, Herman said.

Some people found refuge in school buildings although the flood water began to reach the floors of the building when the rain is heavier, he said.

"It is the biggest flooding hitting the area since 2000," he said, adding the district administration has extended relief aid to the flood victims.

Meanwhile, the regional Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency said heavy rains for several day had caused widespread flooding .

In the regency of Malaka 185 hectares of rice field were damaged by the floods, it said.
